The documentary What God Hath Wrought examines the creation of the Calvary Chapel, a church started by Chuck Smith that sought to modernize and simplify religious worship. This humble, little church eventually helped to birth a wave of religious revivalism that borrowed from the trappings of hippie culture. Looking back, we see how far this wave has reached and What God Hath Wrought from such humble beginnings.
In the late 1960s Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa was the epicentre of one of the greatest spiritual revivals in American History that would later be called the "Jesus Movement". Its pastor Chuck Smith aka "Papa Chuck", by many considered "the father of the Jesus Movement", welcomed the hippie counterculture into his church and the rest is history. Calvary Chapel had a huge influence on modern day Christianity by birthing contemporary Christian music and worship as well as creating a more informal church atmosphere. Built on "simply teaching the Word of God simply", verse by verse, chapter by chapter, from Genesis to Revelation the "Calvary Chapel Movement" has spread nationally and internationally counting over 2000 Calvary Chapel style churches worldwide. This documentary explores the history of Calvary Chapel and its impact on Christianity as well as the life of Chuck Smith told in his own words.
